Sayaka Koike – the everyday made ethereal

In a beautifully re-modeled machiya in the heart of Kyoto, Sayaka Koike is making unique work that really highlights the unique qualities of dye-work. Drawing inspiration from everyday moments and feelings, Sayaka combines various resist techniques which are not usually compatible to produce rough textures and depth. Leaving white edges visible or showing the movement of dye colour with bleeding effects, Sayaka’s works are a conscientious attempt at differentiating dye-work from other types of artwork.

A level of control and manipulation of water and dye but also leaving things to chance are part of Sayaka’s philosophy and I’m excited to write more about her work soon! Here are some photos from Sayaka’s studio.
